Officiating irritants by Tommy Nunez

Officiating Success: „Basketball Officiating is a game of irritations.” To be completely successful officials must remove all irritants from their officiating.

There is no place for arrogance in officiating. The official, who by his presence and demeanor on the court has the effect of encouraging players to avoid rule infractions, has achieved officiating excellence.

1. Appearance: Is your uniform proper according to league standards? Do you keep it always clean and neat and does it fit you properly?

2. Psychical condition: Are you ready medically and physically to perform the vigorous duties required of the basketball officials? Are you able to keep up with the play? Are you proud of the appearance you make on the court?

3. Pre-game court appearance and instructions: Do you take care to see that you are ready for each game? Do you cover your pre-game duties properly? Do you see to it that coaches, captains, and game officials are properly instructed?

4. Manner: Do you know and administer the rules of the game without giving the impression of knowing too much? Are you courteous to coaches, players, and game officials at all time? Do you maintain a friendly but firm attitude toward all?

5. Signals: Do you know and give all game signals properly? Are your signals clear and definite? Do you make sure that you do not antagonize by becoming overdramatic? Do you do your job in a workmanlike manner and with confidence?

6. Making the toss: Is your toss high and straight? Do you penalize illegal advantage on the toss?

7. Whistle: Is your whistle a good one? Do you carry a spare? Do you blow your whistle sharply indicating firmness and confidence?

8. Voice: Do you use your voice sparingly? Is it sharp, crisp, and clear? Do you talk with your whistle in your mouth? Do you avoid “yelling”? Is your voice strong, pleasant, and firm?

9. Technical foul: Do you exercise good judgment in assessing the technical foul or do you use it as a weapon of protection? Are you reluctant to impose the technical foul when the situation demands? Do you permit unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of player or coach to go unchallenged?

10. Hustle: Do you save yourself for the next play or game or do you give every play and every game your very best?
